Following some communication a while ago with the LAA, this is what I’ll need to provide/demonstrate at a minimum:

  • The avionics installation will need a MOD7 to cover the Nav/Com/Transponder, plus a MOD17 if ‘certified’ ADS-B Out is to be enabled (ref TL 3.03).
  • The electronic backup instrumentation will need to meet the requirements of TL 3.20.
  • A mod application will be needed for the autopilot installation.
  • A mod application will be needed if the pitot head is altered from the standard arrangement.
  • If the instrument panel is deemed to be structural on that type, then we may need a mod application for the changes to that.

I plan to have “certified” ADS-B out1, so MOD17 will be required.

The G5 meets the requirements of TL 3.20, so that’s all set.

The pitot head will be altered from standard. The standard pitot arrangement on a Cozy is to build it into the nose, with static on the side. I’ll be placing mine either under the wing (per Garmin’s instructions), or on the side of the fuselage as several other Cozy builders have done, provided I can get Garmin and the LAA’s blessing.

The instrument panel is structural, but only for the horizontal struts, it appears. I’ll check with an LAA inspector soon and see what they think.

  1. This means having System Level Integrity 1 (SIL 1) - the ADS-B Out transmission includes a GNSS+SBAS derived location. SIL 0 (no SBAS) is disregarded by most aircraft.
